This course will introduce students to poetic analysis, covering such elements as rhyme scheme, meter, and figurative language, and allow students to experiment with traditional poetic forms as they develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of poetry as a uniquely creative mode of expression. Just because it’s a sonnet doesn’t mean it has to be stuffy!

Students involved in the tech course would be expected to serve as crew for the May production.
1:00-3:00:
Drama
Fee: TBA (approx. $100)
Maximum (cast): 20
Through skills workshops and rehearsing for our play in May, students will learn about the fundamentals and necessary skills for acting on stage. Special focus will be placed on playing comedy, especially satire.
Please note: Acceptance into Drama performance will be based on auditions. Students who do not receive acting roles may opt for another afternoon course as well as for the morning Theatre Tech course.
For our auditions (January 10, 12:00-3:00) , here's what I'd like each student to bring:
1) A monologue (doesn't need to be especially long) from a comedy. I am looking to see at least two emotions displayed clearly.
2) A joke. I would like to hear an entertaining joke.
3) A list of interesting physical or vocal things a student can perform along with the means to demonstrate at least a couple of them. (for example: juggling, interesting accents, hula hooping, gymnastic ability, ability to recreate interesting animal noises, etc.) I know that some students will protest that they can't do anything interesting, but I don't believe it. Everybody's got something interesting to show other people.
What I am looking for in auditions are these things:
1) A desire to engage your audience. I want actors who want to make their audience interested in them.
2) A nugget of stage presence. I want actors who know they are there to provide something for an audience.
A desire to learn more about the craft.
Photography
Fee: $100
Minimum 10, Maximum 18
Students will study light as it relates to the camera, and how a camera works to reproduce what you see into an image that can be shared on a computer or printed on paper. This “first principles” knowledge will be used to learn how to control your camera and the light available to produce the results desired. Principles of good composition and lighting techniques will be discussed with demonstrations to show how different position of the subject and light sources can effect the message conveyed by the image.
Students should come with their own digital camera that has manual control of aperture andshutter speed available. Many “point and shoot” cameras have this feature, so students will not be required to have a camera more sophisticated than this. However if students do have access toa DSLR type of camera, this would also be welcome in the course.
Students will be expected to bring their camera to class each week. In addition, assignments will be given each week based on the lesson covered. As there are no computers available in the class, students should be prepared to hand in assignments on a memory card or DVD along with a description of what they have tried to achieve. Memory cards will be returned the following week.
Students will explore nearby areas of Dundas (in pairs or groups) as they put their instruction into practice.
Cake Decorating
Fee: $200
Minimum 6, Maximum 12
Classes will cover basic cake decorating (including hygiene and equipment discussion). The first week will be an orientation class to describe the program and talk about the details of the classes and ascertain what type of cakes the students are interested in producing. Most of the weeks, the students will decorate cakes but one week would be cupcake decoration. The students will be expected to bring along a cake and icing each week. I will give them an icing recipe the first week. They will be told each week what is required for the following week.
They will receive 6 piping tips, a rose nail, couplers and piping bags in the kit. For the cupcake class, I will supply some extra items for decorating the cupcakes.
