Winning an Argument: The Art of Debate

This course will examine both theoretical and practical aspects
of debating. It will include a study and analysis of rhetoric, as well as
provide opportunities for students to practice their debating skills on one
another. It will also include biographical studies of famous orators,
analysis of communication differences between males and females, mock
parliamentary debates, and the watching of video clips of famous debates.
All students will be expected to participate in presenting material and
debating their classmates.

Art History
Instructor: Irene Pypker

Does art matter when there is suffering in the world? What’s its purpose? Why bother to look at it? How do we look at and evaluate art? What about modern art? Who have been the most influential artists in history? What have they done that we should notice? Why should we care? These are some of the questions we will explore, as we look at art through the ages of Western Civilization.

This course is not about learning names and dates primarily but will be a discussion- oriented look at art and architecture from ancient to modern. Class discussions will be based on weekly readings and slideshows. Touching on philosophy and worldviews, we’ll explore both the rocky relationship Christians have had with art and the biblical call to put art in its proper place in our lives. ‘Art Appreciation’ as much as ‘Art History,’ this course’s goal is to foster deeper appreciation for and understanding of the marvelous gift of art.

Gym

This semester we will be working on European handball and floor hockey. European handball is a combination of basketball, soccer, hockey, and lacrosse and has been described as "the fastest and most exciting sport in the world." Floor hockey is a variation of ice hockey and students will be expected to bring their own sticks for play. We will be spending 6 weeks for each sport, learning:
*the origin and history of the game
*rules and regulations
*skills involved
*actual play

Literary Analysis
Instructor: S. Robin Larin

Minimum: 6 students; Maximum: 16 students

We all know a great story when we read one...but what makes it great? This course will cover the basics of literary analysis, including annotating, identifying literary elements and devices, creating an argumentative thesis, and writing a literary analysis essay. Students will focus primarily on short fiction to practise these skills and develop a deeper engagement with and appreciation for the art of literature.

Studio Art
Instructors: Scott Aasman and Michelle Kikkert
Time: 10:45-12:15
Fee: $125 (including materials)

Art class is not simply a time to make nice pictures (although that’s part of it!); it is a time of exploration, of creative expression, and of hard work as we cultivate our sense of creativity and visual communication. Students will explore what it means to be visual communicators through selected readings, in-class discussions and critiques, and the practice of art. Utilizing the principles of design, basic colour theory, and the examples of past masters students will explore the mediums of drawing, painting, and printmaking as ways of expression, communication, and, most importantly, praise.

Drama
Instructor: A. J. Haygarth
Time: 1:00-3:00
Fee: $100 for actors and stage managers; $50 for crew (set, props, costumes. lighting, etc)

Production, tech, and acting--students will develop a full understanding of the process of theatre production. The main goal of this course will be to put on a polished theatrical production. The actors will receive instruction in practical aspects of theatre as an art form. Attention will be focused on vocal training, acting styles and techniques, character development, stage movement, creative self-expression, improvisation, and theatre games. The technical team will learn and be responsible for all backstage aspects of the production including costuming, set design, lighting, sound, and stage management.

Missions

For those not interested in Drama, an opportunity for missions service will be provided in the afternoon time slot. The Good Shepherd Centre in Hamilton is able to accommodate a group of teens to help out in their warehouse. The duties include sorting through clothing, food, and small household goods and repackaging of multi items into individual packages for distribution to the homeless and other clients who are in need.

In addition to these regular Thursday afternoons, Mrs. Harrison plans to arrange monthly service projects on days other than Thursday, such as to the Ontario Christian Gleaners. OCG is a Christian, interdenominational charitable organization where many volunteers clean, dice, dry, mix and bag surplus produce such as onions, carrots, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, beans, lentils, apples, and pears into a nutritious soup mix and fruit snack ready for distribution. The OCG donates the soup mix to reputable relief organizations with logistics to distribute the food where it is needed. Other service possibilities will be discussed.

Parents of students involved will be asked to assist with transportation when possible.

Ballroom Dance!

Canoe Trip 2011!

Welcome back, intrepid canoeists! This year's students braved rain and rapids, sun and spiders on our annual DVHS Co-op Canoe Trip--and lived to tell the tale. This enthusiastic account from Emma Rusby Bell shows why the Canoe Trip is such a highlight of the DVHS year.

This past Wednesday morning, twenty-one students and four leaders gathered at the Pypkers' house before it was light out. We packed our bags and barrels into trailers and piled canoes on top. At about 8:30, we climbed into the vehicles and started on the three-and-a-half-hour drive up to our starting point. Everyone was excited for the trip, but I don't think we knew how incredible it would be.
    One of the great things about the co-op canoe trip is how much responsibility the leaders allow the students to have. Every day before we started paddling, they would tell us a bit about where we'd be paddling, give us directions, and tell us things to look out for. The leaders let us know our limits, but they let us try things too. On one portage, Kurtis and I decided to try to pull the canoe through the swifts and waterfalls rather than portage, and they told us to go ahead. On Friday, a few of us were sent to scout out campsites where all the students took part in cooking meals, doing dishes, collecting
firewood, setting up tents and tarps, filtering water, and everything else necessary.
      We had plenty of time for fun, however. Despite rain, everyone was cheerful. While we were paddling, people were singing, reciting riddles, telling jokes, and laughing a lot. At the campsites we'd sit around the fire and talk, watch the stars, go swimming, play games, and even learn how to tie knots. We had four student-led devotion sections during the trip, each about a chapter in Jonah. One group even did a skit and gave out marshmallows as rewards for correct answers. This year over half the students were new, so it was good to have time out of the canoes where we could all talk and get to know each other. It was amazing to see how gracious and kind everyone was. If you were having trouble with carrying your canoe or bags or setting up your tent, somebody would appear and help you. Everyone carried their fair load and helped others when they needed it.
    Another beautiful aspect of the trip was the nature surrounding us. We heard loons call and saw cormorants drying out, and someone even said they saw a beaver. We were amazed by the beautiful rocks, almost black water, and the hundreds of frogs at our first docking place.
        On Saturday afternoon, we drove home. We stopped at Wendy’s for dinner where we were happy to feed our cravings for greasy, salty food after being in the backwoods for four days. In the fluorescent lights, everyone suddenly looked exhausted and sunburnt. We pulled into the Pypker's driveway at about 8 p.m. and were reunited with our families. Perhaps we were glad to have warm showers and sleep in our own beds again, but personally I wish the trip could have gone on forever.

DVHS Co-op Fall 2011

Welcome to a new year at DVHS Co-op! Fall is in the air as the weather gets crisper, the leaves begin to turn, and enthusiastic students come pouring back through the doors at St Paul's United Church in Dundas on Thursdays, eager to plunge into exciting new courses such as Civics, Spanish, and Essay Writing. Well, okay....maybe they're a little more eager to renew old friendships and grab lunch at Tim Horton's, but we're glad that students old and new have signed up for the full package : )

And this year we've hit a record enrollment with a total of 50 students registered for DVHS! We're grateful to have found our beautiful venue at St Paul's (29 Park St. W., Dundas) and look forward to another year of interactive learning. Registration is now closed for the Fall semester. Classes begin September 29 and will run until December 15. The Winter semester will run January 19-April 12.

News flash! Logo Contest! It's time for a new logo to represent our recent name change to DVHS Co-op. All students are invited to submit entries by September 29. Please note that all entries must be via email to me so must be digital in nature, not hand-drawn. The winning logo will be used on our student and faculty ID cards and letterhead, and the winning designer will be presented with that ever-cherished prize, a $20 Tim Horton's card ; ) ID cards for students and faculty/ parents will be made in one batch in early October; you will receive an email indicating when you are to email a digital photo of yourself.

Fall Semester:

Civics
Instructor: Gord Heath

Minimum class size: 10

This course examines what it means to be a responsible citizen in a democratic country. It explores the various levels of government (local, provincial, federal, global), and looks at ways to get involved in the political process. It also examines the diverse ways in which various Christian groups understand political involvement.

Assignments range from the theoretical (e.g. understanding systems through reading and the writing of essays) to the practical (e.g. writing letters to politicians and engaging in class debates). Students are to come to class prepared to express and defend their own views. Special attention will be given to the Ontario Election (October 6th). The class may include a field trip near the end of the semester.

Required readings will be available online so no text needs to be purchased..

Gym

In the Fall semester, we will spend six weeks each on volleyball and basketball skills. Each class will involve 1/2 hour of drill/skill practice followed by games for one hour. Proper gym attire (modest T-shirt, modest shorts or sweat pants and non-marking running shoes) is mandatory. No jeans or hoodies as they are a safety issue. For volleyball--knee pads are highly recommended.

Spanish I

After finishing the course the students will be able to understand, read, speak and write grammatical sentences in the past and present tenses, understand short dialogues, greetings, colors, days of the week, months of the year, and seasons. We will also discuss the verb “to be” in all its forms. We will also learn the names of different foods, family members, hobbies, clothing and parts of the house.

My name is Carmen Garcia. I was a high school Spanish teacher in Colombia for fifteen years. There I taught Spanish grammar, literature and drama. Since coming to North America I have taught in a variety of teaching environments such as homeschool groups, private tutorials and translation work with seniors. I look forward to working with the parents and students of the DVHS Co-op.

Ballroom Dance

Join in this unique opportunity as a certified instructor teaches you the basics of ballroom dancing with such dances as waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, and merengue. Students will gain confidence to dance at weddings, gala fundraisers, and other special events while having fun and getting fit.

Writing: The Elegant Essay

Instructor: S. Robin Larin

Maximum class size: 16

This course will cover all aspects of essay writing--thesis statements, organization, introductions, conclusions, transitions, etc-- and will focus at the end on the persuasive essay. Elements of writing style will also be addressed and liberal doses of humour will be included : ). Students will be encouraged to develop their written communication skills in creative and winsome ways that honour our God-given gift of language.

Prerequisite: Students must be able to identify all basic parts of speech (basic grammar terms) and to write a coherent paragraph with a topic sentence, concluding sentence, and no serious grammatical problems. I will require by e-mail at registration a sample paragraph and if possible a sample essay of any type (except creative writing/ fiction) written by the student in the past year.

Please note: This is the same course which was offered in Fall 2010. A Literary Analysis course is planned for Winter 2012.

Acting Fundamentals

In this introduction to acting, students will learn techniques for strengthening the body in preparation for performance on stage, exercises to free inhibitions and expand range of movement, and processes to build trust between performers and develop bonding as a troupe. All exercises and lessons will reflect a Christian perspective on theatre arts. The biblical emphases on caring for one’s body and applying it to its fullest potential, fostering harmony within community, and developing such character qualities as honesty, courtesy, kindness, gentleness, courage, respectfulness, perseverance, and patience will all inform the course.

Theatre Arts can be seen as a means to honour God through mutual trust and respect as well as the dramatic exploration of the truths of the human condition in both its brokenness and beauty. This course will be an open and trusting forum that I will cultivate together with the students in light of a Christian worldview. The environment will offer students the opportunity to walk in the words of God together. The utmost positivity is encouraged in the classroom, and this will allow these students to express themselves fully without the fear that negativity can sometimes espouse within young creators. This positive environment, coupled with the exercises run in class, will help them to free their inhibitions. The level of trust that will develop as a result will truly provide these students with the freedom to be open and honest individuals while working towards accomplishing common goals.

Here we go again! A brand new theatrical production for 2011!

This year’s Co-op production is Pygmalion, written in 1912 by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. The play is about the British social classes, phonetics and most ultimately; love. A Mr. Henry Higgins is convinced that he can make Eliza Doolittle, a ragged, whiny cockney woman from the streets turn into a properly defined, distinguished lady. However, he may have a few lessons to learn himself.
Pygmalion is perhaps best known as My Fair Lady, a musical adaption of the original play. It was also famously adapted into a 1964 film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

9:00-10:30:

Art: Drawing
Instructor: James Tughan
This is an introductory 1st year college and university level (but not
for credit) drawing course, offered for high school students,covering
a range of drawing styles including gesture, contour (many kinds),
figure drawing, perspective and parallel axonometric drawing, abstract
and realist chiaroscuro rendering in a range of drawing materials. In
this course we explore the pleasure of various kinds of drawing used
to construct images in any other medium, as well as to complete
drawings as finished works of art in themselves. Drawing should be
fun. It should build confidence in one’s imagined visual ideas. It is
a way of touching the world around us with our eyes. That is how I
approach it. This is also an opportunity to work with a seasoned
professional and instructor who is familiar what it takes to succeed
in both business and at the college or university level, and to
prepare portfolios for the post-secondary interviews and portfolio
reviews involved. The drawing exercises in this course are also
designed to give a student a head start on the workload and creative
challenges involved at that level.

Fencing
Beginners will learn the fundamentals by practicing and competing with
each other. This class teaches basic fencing movements, techniques,
and rules. Fencing equipment is provided. The instructor is an NCCP
certified fencing coach and qualified teacher (OCT).

10:45-12:15

Woodworking
Build a Night Table – In this class, students will build a night table
and learn different types of joinery techniques in woodworking. They
will also learn how to use various shop tools to complete their
project. At the end of the semester, each student will take home
their night table.
Practical skills learned: Shop safety, safe and effective use of hand
and power tools, cutting wood, joinery, reading blueprints/plans, hand
and power sanding techniques, wood finishing and staining.

Painless Poetry
This course will both introduce students to poetic analysis, covering
such elements as rhyme scheme, meter, and figurative language, and
allow students to experiment creatively with traditional poetic
forms. Just because it’s a sonnet doesn’t mean it has to be stuffy!
There are no required texts; poetry and materials to be used will be
available online or will be provided in handouts.

1:00-3:30:

Drama

Please note: Acceptance into Drama performance will be based on
auditions. Students who do not receive acting roles may then opt for
technical positions or register for another afternoon course.

DVSA Arts and Crafts Sampler
Kathy Cope is a textile artist and children's art and crafts teacher
with over 20 years experience. Her main areas of interest are weaving,
basketry, papermaking and fabric design. She is a long-standing member
of the Burlington Handweaver's and Spinner's Guild. After obtaining
her BSc from Queen's University, Kathy took numerous courses in the
Creative Art and Design program at Mohawk College. She is currently an
instructor at the Dundas Valley School of Art.

In this course, the students will experience a variety of Arts and
Crafts with emphasis on personal expression. The course will begin
with an introduction to the Elements and Principles of Design using
drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking techniques. The second
half of the course will focus on hands on crafts such as basketry,
weaving, papermaking, surface design on textiles, felting, and wire
sculpture.

Canoe Trip 2010

This year's canoe trip was certainly an adventure! The participants experienced a lot of wet, cold weather but they came though it just fine and have many stories to tell!

“What have I gotten myself into?” thought some of us co-op kids on the second day of the canoe trip. “I can’t believe I’m doing this! I want a hot shower and to curl up in my warm bed.” We were careful not to show these feelings.

This fall, on the annual high school co-op canoe trip, we went up North to an area in the French River. It was completely in the wilderness with absolutely no washrooms, running water, or electricity. We were prepared for an adventure, but we had no idea what exactly we would be facing on the exciting trip of 2010! During this trip, I learned an important character building lesson.

The first night it started to rain and in the morning it continued to rain. For breakfast we ate scrambled eggs, sausage, and hash browns under tarps by the warm, smoky fire. The rain seemed to be slightly clearing and by the time we set our canoes in the water it was not raining anymore. “Hooray,” we thought, but right as we set out the familiar ‘pitter patter’ of the rain started again. Soon our hands were soaked. Our pants and sweaters were next to get wet, and it didn’t take long for all of our layers to be drenched. We were soaked to the skin! When lunch time rolled around we found a campsite and Mr. Mackinnon, Peter, and David quickly got a fire started to warm us up. Standing in a tight circle around the fire, all thirty of us were steaming! It felt incredible to be warm and somewhat dry again!

The most incredible part was the attitude of the exhausted canoeists! After all, we had just gone through a cold rainy morning of canoeing and we had many reasons to be discouraged about the trip, but instead everyone seemed to be laughing and having an enjoyable time in spite of the weather. When it was time to get back into the canoes, nobody complained about getting wet all over again. After a few more bone chilling hours of canoeing in the steady rain, wading through a couple of rapids, and accomplishing a portage, we arrived at our campsite. The raining stopped and we worked together to promptly set up tents so we could change into dry clothes. We all were still smiling and thankful to have made it through the day safe and sound.

I’m sure everybody learned something through this canoe trip. I learned that attitude can make the difference between having a wonderful time or a horrible time. Anthony J. D’Angelo said, “wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.” That is exactly what the co-op kids of 2010 did and their terrific attitude made the trip a blast. Whenever I smell smoke or hear chattering teeth, I remember that amazing day in the wilderness of Ontario, where we bravely faced the elements.

Here are a few highlights of my first time on the trip.

I had a really good time despite being a bit nervous. It was a blast to be with all the other students and hang out. I really enjoyed the third day because the weather was awesome. We had canoe races and Janelle and I jumped out of our canoe at one point that day. Even the portage was fun that day. I definitely would have dropped the food barrel if it hadn't been for Steph. I also really loved sitting around the fire every night. The first night when we all sat on the rocks was really cool. I liked cooking supper too. It was a really good idea to get us all to pitch in this year by everyone helping with a meal. The second day, when it was raining, was pretty discouraging at some points, but we still had a lot of fun. I look back at it and think I really learned to canoe that day. That night we were all drying out our own or somebody else's clothes by the fire. The last day we got soaked again but getting in the warm van, huddling up under a sleeping bag and eating Wendy's was still so much fun. It felt really good to get warm and we had lots of laughs in the van braiding each others hair on the way back. I don't think I ever felt so tired as I did on the drive back home.

A New Year Begins! 2010-2011

Welcome back, member families, to the High School Co-op, and welcome to our new members. Some exciting developments have been in the works over the summer!

--Our new name: Although we will no doubt continue to refer to it as simply “Co-op,” in order to identify our group publicly, we have adopted the more specific name, “Dundas Valley High School Co-op.” Got a ring to it, doesn’t it?

--Our new location: As our new name indicates, we are still based in Dundas but have moved to St. Paul’s United Church at 29 Park Street West--just a few blocks from our previous location. St. Paul’s provides us with larger facilities and the option to add more courses to our schedule to accommodate, we hope, all students who would like to participate in Co-op this year.

--Our new ID cards: All Co-op students will receive a photo ID card, and parents will receive a faculty card upon request. These cards will be useful for ID purposes in a number of situations, including obtaining student or teacher discounts. We will let you know when we will need your photos e-mailed to us for the cards.

A few details about this coming semester:

--The annual Canoe Trip is scheduled for September 15-18. Get geared up!

--Semester 1 classes will run on Thursdays from September 23 to December 9.

--Course selection should be made by e-mail with the registrar, Stacey Larin: theshire@cogeco.ca

--Registration forms and semester fee of $75 per family must be received by mail by September 7.

--All course fees are payable to the instructors on the first day of class.

Art(8:30-10:30)--James Tughan
This class is ideal for beginners as well as advanced art students. James Tughan will teach basic gesture and contour line drawing technique, the use of colour and chiaroscuro, bas-relief constructions, all with attention to imagination and metaphor. James describes his classes as non-threatening, playful, imaginative and purposeful.

Current Issues: Christians and Pop Culture--Ben Bowman and Irene Pypker
Is popular culture like a weed that needs to be trimmed and burned or like a tomato plant that needs to be cultivated and pruned to produce fruit? This course aims to help students understand the role Christians play in their relationship with popular culture and mainstream media. Two main attitudes of Christians to pop culture have historically been mindless acceptance and blanket condemnation. In this course we will navigate between these two extremes to try to find a way in which we can fulfill our creative potential as creatures of God in His world. Sample topics for sessions include imagination, creative communities, and the relationship between parents and popular culture.

Using Eyes Wide Open by William Romanowski and Culture Making by Andy Crouch, along with other handouts from key texts, we will survey Christian literature on popular culture. This will also be an interactive course, with a focus on in-class discussion based on readings, media clips and other examples of popular culture. Students will be required to prepare/present one or more of their own pop culture samples, along with their thoughtful analysis of the sample. Some sort of creative response, whether essay, oral presentation, visual, musical, or poetic, will also be required.

Ben Bowman is a 4th year Redeemer student with a keen interest in youth and culture- making. Irene Pypker will assist.

First Aid and CPR--Red Cross
This course will be taught by a Red Cross Instructor and will include a take-home manual. This course is more intensive than the Emergency First Aid course taught at co-op a few years ago. The student will earn a three-year certification. This course provides comprehensive First Aid & CPR techniques for those who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the home or workplace. A variety of topics are covered from basic first aid such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR Level A, and prevention of disease transmission to more severe sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine.

The Lord of the Rings--John MacKinnon
This 12-week course will be a literary course for the most part with practical lessons in life added into the lesson mix based on the adventures of Bilbo, Gandalf, and Frodo and the rest of the characters. The literary component will come predominantly from the work entitled "Literary Lessons from The Lord of the Rings" by Amelia Harper, published by "Home Scholar Books". (this was used by Ms. S. Larin a couple of years back). One aspect of this amazing story we will examine is the deeply embedded Christian element. Although this is not a work of theology proper we will examine Tolkien's deeply held Christian world view as seen through the lives of his characters in this work.

We will look at the literary techniques used by J.R.R. Tolkien to tell his epic tale and why they have been successful. The class time will be infused with dramatic readings by students of important sections of the book as well as other in class activities which will add to the interest and impact of this class. This class will not be based on the movie rendition of The Lord of the Rings, although we will use Peter Jackson's film trilogy to illustrate some aspects of the work. Students should have read the full story by the end of class as this will enhance their class experience and so summer reading is requested.

As the story is set within the context of a physical journey by various characters so this class will take 4 of the 12 lessons to test ourselves in a physical manner. We will take one class for learning navigation by map and compass in the Dundas Valley Trail Centre. One class will involve team building at "Gravity" a local climbing gym in Hamilton. One class will involve the art and challenge of outdoor food preparation including learning the use of a compound bows and arrows and a crossbow for "hunting". (No real hunting will take place we will use archery targets). As the rings of power held such an important position in this tale by Tolkien we will take one class to exam the art of jewelry making, including a field trip.

Students can expect to write 3 essays and an "in class" final exam. Essays will be submitted by email to the instructor. Students are expected to participate in class academic exercises and other activities as noted above.

Writing: The Elegant Essay--Stacey Larin
This course will cover all aspects of essay writing--thesis statements, organization, introductions, conclusions, transitions, etc, and will focus at the end on the persuasive essay. Elements of writing style will also be addressed and liberal doses of humour will be included :-).

Health and Nutrition--Vicky Hachey
This course will look at the various body systems and how the nutrient breakdown of food supports them. There will be some unique food preparations, some eating seasoned with lots of learning and fun, such as the Papier Mache Stomach or the Bacteria War. All that is required is a 3 ring binder, pen, and paper, occasionally containers to bring your creations home.

Acting for the Stage--Gwendolyn Starks
This class will approach the fundamentals of story telling, character study, and acting for the stage from a theological perspective. The students will be required to participate in vocal and physical warm-ups, improvisation, and other assignments that will teach them how to create a believable character for the stage. Each class will also have a short theatre history component. There will be some required reading, writing, and memorization involved, and a showcase of the student's work will be performed at the end of term.

Pottery--Keith Hamilton (at the Kool Klay Kafe)
Students will learn the fundamentals of making pottery, including types of
clay, where it comes from, how the firing process works, as well as
information about glazes and glazing. They will participate in preparation
and cleanup. Several techniques of hand building will be taught, beginning with the
basics of making pinch pots, slab and coil building. Creativity will be
stretched to enable students to create many interesting pieces, using
surface decoration, painting and glazing.

We were privileged to have a profit enough from our drama production (As You Like It) once again so that we could attend Stratford. This year we saw the professionals do As You Like It! Very interesting to compare Adam to Ava, our Touchstone to theirs, our LeBeau to theirs and so on. The preview with the actors was fun and interactive. Enjoyed it!

As usual, we had a great day and spent some wonderful time on the Festival lawns playing frisbee, talking, eating our picnic lunches and even cake courtesy of Karen L. Thanks!

WAR IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY Dr. Gordon Heath

This course is an introduction to global conflict in the twentieth century. It will examine the major wars that have shaped the world, as well as explore the various Christian perspectives on war and peace. The purpose of the class is to provide the students with a deepened awareness of their own position on war and peace, an understanding of the events that have led to the world being the place that it is today, as well as sharpened skills for doing historical research.

The class should be suitable for all grades of high school, but parents should be forewarned that the subject material means that the class will cover unsettling content (e.g. war, holocaust, genocide, etc.), read non-Christian material (e.g. All Quiet on the Western Front), and watch scenes from movies where people get killed (e.g. Saving Private Ryan).

I am looking forward to this class. I think that it will be quite informative as well as interesting (there are lots of movie clips of actual war footage, as well as Hollywood versions of conflicts). The class will have access to PowerPoint and a large screen, so these components can be incorporated into the class time.

I also hope to have a movie night or two to look at some movies, and perhaps even a games night (Axis and Allies? Diplomacy?). Attendance at these evening events (if they even happen) would be optional.

LEARNING TO LIVE IN THE WORLD Amyann Faul Groen

The Philosophies of C.S. Lewis and Ursula K. LeGuin explored through their Fiction

It could be said that literature is a social process. Literature, though defined by culture, itself defines and forms culture. This is because, as human beings, we shape our lives around myths. These can be either godly or idolatrous, or most often, sadly, a mixture of the two. But we cannot escape myths. We cannot escape their power. Stories shape who we are and what we will become. The stories we adopt form the basis of our belief and action; how we will function in the world, how we will act towards our neighbours, and how we view ourselves.

We will be exploring the belief-and-behaviour shaping power of literature (fantasy literature in particular) by reading texts by C.S. Lewis and Ursula K. LeGuin. I think we will focus on Perelandra (by Lewis) and Tehanu (by LeGuin). We will read some supplementary essays to help us deepen our understanding and interpretation of the texts. We will respond to what we read through formal as well as creative writing exercises.

ONE STROKE PAINTING Lynne Jury-Doro

What is one stroke? It is the technique of using two or more coloured paints on one brush at the same time so that with "one stroke". This creates blending, shading and highlights all in one stroke. This art form is more commonly used to paint objects, furniture, walls and even clothing and used mainly for flowers although fruit and animals can be done using this technique for the more advanced student

Mostly projects to paint come from the $ store and it would probably be best if I brought in enough project pieces for the students every week so that they all did the same project at one time, to lessen the logistics of where to put everything. With this type of art, one formation is taught and students are encouraged to not 'freestyle' in class but everyone is taught a formation and then paints it on their project piece in the required colours. Students are then free to practice in their own style and their own pieces, or on paper at home where they will have time to experiment.

Ideally Folk Art One Stroke colours are best and a short list of desired colours will be provided, but cheaper paints are available at the dollar store, not so good, but students could work with these and it would keep costs to a minimum.

One stroke paint brushes are available at Michaels and usually sold in sets; with a 40% off coupon they are not too expensive. As previously mentioned I may be able to purchase brushes and some paints at a preferential price for this course. One Stroke paint brushes are unique and are absolutely essential for this course.

Minimal other equipment is needed (there is of course a multitude of things one can buy) but it's easy to improvise with water pots, cloths and so on which students can bring from home.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

John Butler is a graduate of Humber College, at which he trained and excelled in Creative Photography. His photography skills have won him multiple awards and recognition which inspired him to create johnbutlerphoto, a budding small business based out of Hamilton. John specializes in food and product photography and has had the honor of working with clients such as Alexander Keith’s and Let Them Eat Cakes. As a secondary focus, John photographs portraits, weddings, and events where he has had the opportunity to capture some very special moments. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to work with you. I have watched three of your productions on DVD and was in the audience of your first show The Tempest. The last three productions have shown me a wonderful progression in your acting ability and stage awareness. Therefore, I think you would all enjoy returning to one of Shakespeare’s comedies.

I have narrowed this year's production to As You Like It which is also being done at Stratford. Before you get concerned about speaking the poetic language, please be assured that I have recently been focusing my own studies on this era and will help you with any difficulties. We will learn not only about the play but also Shakespeare and his place in the history of the English language and have a lot of fun in the process.

With this in mind, I have proposed that we have an acting class before the auditions. It will be an opportunity for us to meet and discuss the play and the auditions. I will introduce a few acting exercises that will strengthen your stage presence and self-awareness. I can also answer any questions regarding my background and my ideas regarding God’s calling on actors and training theatre students from a biblical perspective. We may even have time for a brief history of the Elizabethan era to set the stage.

Perspective Drawing -- artist and musician, Lisa Smouter. This course will focus on the rudiments of perspective drawing, including 1 and 2-Point Perspective. Students will learn how to render various objects in 3D on a 2D surface by learning fundamental rules, and also by observing 3D objects in front of them similar to Still Life drawing. This main portion of the course is very technical, teaching students precision and neatness in their work. Upon displaying a solid understanding of the rudiments, we will also study some guidelines set out by master artists on obtaining the effect of perspective through less technical means (ex. Atmospheric effect). Unlike the first section of the course, this smaller section will relax the artwork students produce, disguising the use of a ruler. A final project will display skills from both portions of the course, producing a beautiful frameworthy piece of art.

Cake Decorating: Students will learn how to bake and prepare a cake for decoration. Each week new techniques and styles will be demonstrated and learned and students will be encouraged to design and complete their choice of cake with an emphasis on creativity and flavour combinations. Apologetics – Dr. Gord Heath. This course is an introduction to Christian apologetics. Apologetics is a defense of the faith, and this course is an introduction to the issues Christians face and how Christians can defend (and present) their faith in light of those issues. The course will have presentations from the instructor, but will also include class presentations, discussions, debates and so forth. Student will be expected to come prepared to engage the subject matter.

Woodworking: There was great enjoyment of this course twice before and as we’ve had requests for a repeat, we are offering it again! Chris Norman enjoyed having our group and is looking forward to having us again. This hands-on program will allow the students to build various projects to develop their skills and confidence, and they will also be able to design and build a custom project of their choice (ie: shelf, table, Muskoka chair, CD rack, etc). During the 2 hour weekly classes they will learn how to safely use various power tools – table saw, compound mitre saw (chop saw), band saw, router, drill press, sanders. They will learn about fasteners and the types of wood available, and how to oil and stain wood propertly. The focus will be on fun, safety and creativity.

“Chris will first show the tools, teach their names and explain their uses. He stresses safety and using the tools properly. He has never had an injury. This immediately goes into a hands-on class where students get to use the tools under his supervision. Small projects are given initially to experiment with the use of the tools, to help students use the power tools, and gain satisfaction in building. The students will be encouraged to consider a larger project with their parent's approval when they are ready for this which may take up several class times.”

Although theatre can be an investigative tool for a great many virtuous things in its ability to poke and prod at the world’s ills in an attempt to discover our role within, we are making no great stabs at moralizing or philosophizing or even, say, achieving historical accuracy. We simply ask that you listen and imagine. Try to recall a time before the onslaught of television, computers and video games--a time when our ears perked to hear a tale told, when storytelling was more a gentle tickle to our senses and a whisper in our ears... but in case that's not enough, we've thrown in a little silliness. Oh, and murder.

ART STUDIO
Come copy a MASTER
This art course will be instructed by Lisa Smouter (B.A. Redeemer University College). Lisa, a Burlington artist, has taught the Art Studio co-op in the past and hopes to continue to encourage creativity, thoughtful art-making, and especially technical proficiency this term.
Reproducing a work from a master artist will be the culminating large project of this 12 week course. We will get there by working on small studies using smaller canvasses experimenting with acrylics and/or oil paints, as well as covering some planning in our sketchbooks. Colour mixing, methods for seeing, and specific painting techniques are among the skills we will cover. Any trained artists will tell you that copying a master is one of the best ways to learn these skills. You will be amazed at what you can reproduce using the steps set out in Lisa's course outline!
This course involves some homework and students will be graded based on participation, completion of work, progress made, and quality of their work.

ENGLISH
This course is split into two sections. The first section is the syllabus for Erin Goheen’s portion of the class (classes 4-8) and the second is for Amyann Groen’s portion (classes 1-3, 9-12).
Erin Goheen is a fourth year PhD candidate at McMaster University, writing her thesis on refugee literature in Canada and church activism with refugees. She was also a part-time faculty member for two years at Redeemer University where she taught two introductory courses in English literature. Refugee literature in Canada is her current area of writing and research. This area of study excites her because of the overlaps between the Biblical stories of exile and displacement and the call for Christians to deal justly and hospitably with displaced people in the present. When she was in high school, her family homeschooled, and so she was part of the Lighthouse Academy about fifteen years ago!
Amyann Groen is currently teaching Creative Writing, Literature and Latin to students at the Lighthouse School Co-operative in Waterdown. She is also teaching a university-level Advanced Placement class (modelled after the Oxford University tutelage system) to two advanced high school students. She is just finishing her last class, an Independent Study on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, for her degree in Honours English and Philosophy from Redeemer University College. In 2005, Amyann had the opportunity to study at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies with Oxford University, concentrating on Medieval Literature and Creative Writing. She has a passion for writing and for fostering and nurturing the gift in others.
Learning to Read Refugee Stories (portion of course by Erin Goheen)
While we may not think much about stories and storytelling in our day-to-day lives, we are constantly participating in stories—either through telling them or by listening to them. The way we tell stories about other people affects the way they are seen by others. The kinds of stories we listen to about other people influences our own view of them. And we treat people on the basis of our view of them. So stories are powerful.
Imagine someone hears a story that has been told in the media that suggests Christians are intolerant, closed communities that are uninterested in people outside their churches. Will that person come to visit our communities? Will she be eager to start up a conversation with you about faith once they know you are a Christian? Probably not, unless she already knew a Christian personally.
Our starting point in this workshop will be acknowledging that stories are powerful in shaping our understanding of people and people groups. This workshop is for those of us who want to learn about the experiences of people who are refugees. It is an opportunity to learn how to “read” stories of refugees well.
Stories about refugees are everywhere these days—in newspapers, on TV, in academic articles, in fiction, and even in sermons. And each of the stories present a different picture of who refugees are, what the experience of being a refugee in Canada is like, and how Canadian citizens are responding to them. We want to be discerning about what stories we listen to and how our views of refugees affects our interactions.
In this course we will examine various examples of “stories” about refugees to help us to practice reading stories well. The first is a clip from a Hollywood film; the second is a music video by a hip hop artist; the third is a newspaper article; and the fourth is a short story. The hope is to learn how to better understand the stories we hear and to discern the degree to which they are truthful and/or unhelpful for sensitizing us to refugee experiences.
Course Description
Over the course of 5 weeks we will learn to be better readers of stories about refugees that are told in our culture. We will use a variety of mediums, including film, news media, fiction, and music to become more sensitive “readers” of refugee narratives. The course will be mainly discussion-based and interspersed with lecture. We will ask questions about the stories such as, “who is writing the story?”; “who is the intended audience?”; “what is the message this story gives us about refugees?”; “what stories do Christians usually listen to?”; “how can we be faithful actors in the world based on our readings of these stories?”
Learning to Write Your Own Story (portion by Amyann Groen)
The first three classes will explore what it means to be creative and how our call to be faithful Christians includes creative acts. We will do this through discussion about what creativity is, through creative writing exercises, and by looking at examples of writing by other writers. Students will be given activities to do at home that will help them to practice what they’ve learned, and in-class work-shopping will help students to learn the art of constructive criticism. In the last four classes we will explore the elements of short stories and work on finding our own voices to tell our stories. As part of this students will work on the group project of producing a class publication of selected creative works.

RED CROSS EMERGENCY FIRST-AID INSTRUCTION
Simple First Aid & CPR techniques taught in an interactive environment, for individuals who want an overview of First Aid & CPR for the workplace or home. The course covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for Adults, CPR Level A, and other topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission.

DRAMA
Clarissa derNederlanden will be our play director for the upcoming term. Clarissa received her Bachelors of Theatre Arts and English from Redeemer College a few years ago. Since then, she had a brief stint as a mat leave replacement for a high school drama teacher, after which she took part in a year-long intensive acting program in Toronto where she continued to live, work and occasionally act for the next several years until she met a boy, got married and had a baby. She continues to dabble in performance by undertaking the recurring role of “The Flying Squirrel” (and others) in radio shows performed by Decoder Ring Theatre ensemble such as “The Red Panda Adventures” and “Black Jack Justice”. To her, theatre is about play. Happy, sad, tragic or compelling-it is about the joyful exploration and interpretation of God's creation. Through it we can seek, search, scrutinize and hopefully come to understand each other (and ourselves) a little more.
We will be doing a staged play of a radio show (perhaps 2-depending on the length). Radio shows had their “heyday” back in the 1930's and 40's so we'd set the play sometime in that era (note for costumers). She'd like to perform a scary/thriller script such as “Suspense!” and possibly a Western. This gives us plenty of opportunity for setting a variety of moods, producing fun sound effects and “twangy” characters (as well as, possibly, a gun fight-whoohoo!). There'd be the play (what's happening in the actors’ lives) and the plays within the play (radio scripts). We'd also reproduce some of the lovely cheesy advertisements that peppered the shows throughout. Fun Fun Fun!!! This gives us the opportunity for a musical element as well (for those with such talents...)
It would be different that what you've done before and it can accommodate quite a large cast with a variety of roles. Most importantly, it will be fun. It excites Clarissa and she hopes it excites you. She loves cast and crew input so please get your imaginations rolling. We'll get a definite script to you in the beginning of January. At the same time, I'll send out a questionnaire that will ask what roles you're especially interested in (ie. large speaking role vs small), if you're musically inclined, or would prefer to be on the creative team (ie. Stage manager, Costuming, Lighting, etc.)

STRATFORD'S "HAMLET"

Last year's Drama class (along with a few parents and siblings) were able to enjoy "Hamlet" at the Stratford Festival Theatre on September 16, along with a picnic lunch on the grounds.

Quite a number of students (and one dad) had an opportunity to participate on stage during the Preview session. We paricipated in a two competitions -- best Shakepearean insults (all quotes from Hamlet) and best death scenes (as that is a main theme in Hamlet). Interactive and lots of fun!

ART STUDIO
Lisa Smouter (B.A. Redeemer University College) is teaching this course which will focus on the practical application of the Principles of Design. In contrast to past terms, this term will help develop design skills as seen in print and computer-based media. Students will be challenged to design thoughtfully, creatively, and effectively in order to prepare them for future design projects often needed by small businesses, churches, or other organizations. Course material consists of taking an existing brand and developing a logo, business card, advertisement, and a basic website. Students must have a laptop computer with Microsoft Word and the ability to download a reputable, free image-editing software program. On October 23rd, a designer who works in the Art field will substitute teach as Lisa will be away.

CURRENT ISSUES
Steve Pypker, a fourth year at Redeemer University College, majoring in political science and minoring in history, philosophy and environmental science.
“Engaging World Issues: Local and Global Syllabus”
An introduction to modern, post-modern and Christian worldviews, followed by a topical study of several current issues, including consumerism, globalization, and the environment.
The course goals are to:
1) To gain an understanding of what a worldview is and does.
2) To wrestle with complex and knotty issues that have day-to-day relevance.
3) To challenge students to think critically about the way in which we engage God's world.
Once a week class discussion of readings, with some lecturing, along with reading some short photo-copied selections (10-20 pages) from books and newspaper/magazine articles, and a 2-3 page (double-spaced) critical response paper, written on a specific topic of interest arising from class discussion.

TOASTMASTERS
Donna Gomsen (who led our group over 4 years ago) will lead. This Youth Leadership Program is an informal course in the arts of communication and leadership. The ability to clearly express your thoughts to others so that they are heard and understood is important if you are to become successful in life. This ability is also important if you want to participate in group discussions and decision-making activities.
By participating in the Youth Leadership Program, you will learn speaking and leadership skills that you’ll be able to use for the rest of your life. You’ll learn to overcome the nervousness everyone feels when asked to speak before an audience, organize and present your ideas logically and convincingly, listen carefully to others’ ideas, offer helpful advice that will help others improve their speaking and leadership skills, and participate in – and even lead – group discussions or meetings. You’ll increase your self-confidence and, best of all, you’ll have fun while you’re learning and you’ll make new friends.
You can’t learn to play the piano by reading books or listening to lectures on the subject. You must put the instructions into practice. Even if you were to read dozens of books on the subjects, you couldn’t become a good speaker or leader without practice. That’s how the Youth Leadership Program works. You are given plenty of opportunities to practice in a friendly, positive atmosphere. And you’ll receive advice and help from your fellow participants in the process.

COOKING
Upstairs at Fortinos in their community room which has a beautiful, fully equipped kitchen with everything one could use including a dishwasher.
Lesia Hucal, a dietician from the Hamilton Public Health, will lead our group and will organize what takes place in each class, what will be made, give information (and home assignments) and so on. The first lesson will give her more indication of the group, what the capabilities and interests are, and so on. From there she will design the program more specifically.

DRAMA
Directed by Joel Bootsma. This year’s production is “1837: The Farmer’s Revolt” -- a lively, humorous and ultimately tragic look at Canada's ill-starred revolution for national independence. It's an ensemble show, with a bit of everything (tragedy and comedy, tense situations, and times to sing). A good theatre workout.

ENGLISH / CURRENT ISSUES
Erin Goheen is a third year PhD candidate at McMaster University, writing her thesis on refugee literature in Canada and church activism with refugees. She has also been a part-time faculty member for two years at Redeemer University where she taught two introductory courses in English literature. Postcolonial literature was the area that she wrote her comprehensive exams in. This area of study excites her because of the overlaps between the Biblical call for justice and the aim of postcolonial fiction to promote justice. When she was in high school, her family homeschooled, and so she was part of the Lighthouse Academy in Ancaster about fifteen years ago!

Postcolonial Literature: reading to discover the world and to become good neighbours
“Love your neighbour as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 19:19; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Romans 13:9; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8)

You move with your parents to a new house and discover your neighbours to the right are from India and those to the left are from Kenya. In such an interconnected world, how do we overcome the fear, disdain, or even fascination with the exotic that we feel in such situations? Knowing their stories and histories isn’t a bad start to becoming good neighbours, both those close by and those we are only indirectly connected to. In these ten co-op classes, we will read postcolonial fiction (or poco lit, as we affectionately call it), the newest wave of literature, as a way of discovering how God calls us to live in such an interconnected world.
Poco lit is fiction that comes from nations and cultures around the world that have only recently gained freedom from British and other European political colonization. Generally the style of writing is straightforward (easy to read) and engaging (because authors are writing in their unique cultural styles). Poco lit authors aren’t “just” storytellers. They use stories to address important political, social, and historical issues in their own countries and in their countries’ relationship with colonizing nations. Poco lit is never just fiction, it is always fiction that uses certain themes to make social commentary. Some of these authors tell stories about their interactions with Canadians, Christians, and white people; so we’ll be reading about our own history too!

This set of workshops will involve reading five short stories and three poems by authors from Africa, the Caribbean, and South America as well as a novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe about one Nigerian tribe’s experience of Western missionaries. We’ll learn about colonial history and how certain countries gained their independence as background to the stories and ask questions about the role Christians have played historically. But we will spend most of our time discussing what each author is trying to do with their writing and then evaluating them. What do we disagree with? What can be learned from these various interpretations of the world? Midway through, we will take one class to learn essay-writing skills. Students will be given the option of writing a short essay on one of the stories we read.

ART STUDIO
This art course will be instructed by Lisa Smouter (Vanderwoude) (B.A. Redeemer University College). The main goals for this course are to continue to encourage creativity, technical proficiency, and thoughtful art-making, with a special focus on developing these skills in preparation for post-secondary education. The twelve weeks will include the use of a variety of mediums (pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, and acrylic/oil paints), of which the students will gain increased experience. Among the activities and exercises are learning proportion (esp. regarding human figure), a brief review of perspective drawing, and various other exercises depending on the needs of the class. As has become a standard, there will be a main project; this term students will be given the opportunity to exercise their creativity and create a meaningful work of art (based on their own worldview, experience, etc.) in response to a particular piece of music. This course involves some homework and students will be graded based on participation, completion of work, progress made, and quality of their work.

TRIATHLON
Mr. Pypker takes part in triathlons and led students in training for the Try-a-Tri a few years ago. The race took place in June at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area. The Try-A-Tri consists of: Swim 375m, Bike 10km, Run 2.5km.

“What doing?”
The canoe trip for 2007 has come and gone!
Thursday, after an enjoyable drive out to Bon Echo in Myrtle, Edna (aka Dave’s Chariot), Walt, Lightning McQueen, and Mater, we set up camp at our great group sites, then took a short canoe trip across the lake in order to do the Cliff Top Trail of a mere 1.5km. What awesome views!
Friday we hiked the Abes & Essens Hiking Trail which was 17km long and took almost 8 hours. Lunch was eaten along the way, and some dared to swim in Abes Lake. Bottles of water were greatly appreciated at the end of the trail!
Saturday, with 15 canoes, we tackled the 21km canoe route (including a few smaller portages and a challenging 1.5km portage!), stopped for lunch along the way, and made it back to camp in one piece… but tired.
Sunday, after breakfast, we had worship time together, then packed up and headed home.
Cooking, cleanup, various chores, activities and devotions were all done by teams.
You guys were awesome!

Another term has begun... some new faces, some we've seen around before. Looking foward to seeing friends and taking courses together.

We're off to the annual Canoe Trip on Thursday. This has developed into the kick-off for the new school year and is an awesome opportunity for the “new” co-op group to get to know each other. These trips are considered highlights of the year and have created many good memories and friendships. This year we're headed to Bon Echo for a few days of canoeing and hiking and such.

Art Studio
This foundational art course will be instructed by Lisa Vanderwoude (B.A. Redeemer University College). Lisa, a Burlington artist, has taught the Art Studio co-op in the past and hopes to continue to encourage creativity, technical proficiency, and thoughtful art-making this coming term. The twelve weeks will include the use of drawing and painting mediums including pencil, charcoal, and acrylic paint (chalk pastel and water-mixable oil paint also an option). Among the activities and exercises are gesture drawing, a review of perspective drawing, and various small studies in preparation for a larger project. The larger project will involve making a spoof on, or somehow altering, a particular work of art from a master artist while maintaining the technical integrity of the artist's style. A class trip is in the planning stages as well.

Current Issues - grades 11 and 12
We will be using the book Great Questions of Canada which grew out of a major editorial series that the Dominion Institute and the National Post created to encourage debate ... about the major challenges facing our country. Great Questions of Canada provides readers with the opportunity to delve into the ideas, arguments and at times sharply contrasting points of view of the authors who contributed.
“…through the lively exchange of ideas, Great Questions of Canada will encourage not only better and more reasoned arguments in classrooms and around dining room tables, but also, at the end of the day, the prospect for national conciliation and the development of solutions to the issues that will define our collective destiny."

Current Issues - grades 9 and 10
Using the book Growing up Christian by Karl Graustein with Mark Jacobsen, we’ll explore how having a solid foundation ourselves will give us the tools we need to meet life’s challenges; to be a witness and example to friends, colleagues, and neighbours today and in the future; to give a reason for what we do and how we do it; and to stand up for what we believe.

Woodworking
There was great enjoyment of this course last year so we are offering it again! Chris Norman (ex pilot, ex cop), really enjoyed having our group and is looking forward to having us again. Chris is prepared to work with a mixed group of prior students and new students.
This hands-on program will allow the students to build various projects to develop their skills and confidence, and they will also be able to design and build a custom project of their choice (ie: shelf, table, Muskoka chair, CD rack…). During the 2 hour weekly classes they will learn how to safely use various power tools – table saw, compound mitre saw (chop saw), band saw, router, drill press, sanders. They will learn about fasteners and the types of wood available, and how to oil and stain wood propertly. The focus will be on fun, safety and creativity.

Phys Ed
This will be a 4 week stint led by Redeemer Education students majoring in Phys Ed as part of their “training” under the leadership of Professor John Byl. Soccer, volleyball, and basketball skills and drills will be the focus of the classes.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S FUN

Set in Athens against the background of a Royal Wedding – Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" tells three intertwining stories: four young friends are involved in a dispute concerning an arranged marriage; six working men rehearse a play to be performed at the Wedding Feast; and the King and Queen of Fairyland’s constant arguing has upset the balance of the mortal world. Puck the mischievous sprite stirs these ingredients to create midsummer madness in the woods – or is it all a Dream?

Performed at Memorial Hall, home of the Village Theatre, on Tuesday May 29 and Thursday May 31.

Last year our Drama production was “Departures and Arrivals” by Carol Shields, directed by Rosie and Bekah.

The play was “a series of dramatic/comic scenes taking place in an airport, the circularity of life's departures and arrivals serving as a unifying theme. Relationships are addressed, as well as the differences between the private and public selves.”

CURRENT ISSUES will continue. This term we will discuss the book, Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology, by Neil Postman.

In his many books, Postman has strongly opposed the idea that technology will "save" humanity. In fact, he has focused on the negative ways in which television and computers alter social behavior. In his book Technopoly, Postman argues that the uncontrolled growth of technology destroys humanity by creating a culture with no moral structure. Thus, technology can be a dangerous enemy as well as a good friend."

Lisa VanderWoude will continue teaching ART STUDIO. This term will focus on weekly exercises incorporating more eye training using real life objects for students to copy. Lisa would work on small eye related assignments each week to help students grasp how the visual world works, how illusion works, how colour is not how we think it appears ("the black and red boat isn't actually black and red") and more! There would be an end of session project which would incorporate some (or all!) of the exercises attempted in the weekly lessons using actual real-life set up objects.

Yes, we are doing another DRAMA production! We know that this is a highlight of term two and are scheduling this in for Thursday afternoons. Even if you think you don’t like Drama, you may be surprised. We’ve heard that statement mentioned by a few timid souls who changed their minds once they got involved. There are many parts, both large and small, but there are also many behind-the-scenes jobs that need to be filled: Stage Manager, Set Design, Costume Design, Make-up, Props, Sound, Lighting, Programs/Promotion. So there’s something for everyone!

Chris Norman of Chris's Woodworking led classes that taught how to safely use the following power tools: Table Saw, Compound Mitre Saw ("Chop Saw"), Band Saw, Router, Drill Press, Sanders

This hands-on program allowed the students to build various projects to develop their skills and confidence, and they were also able to design and build a custom project of their choice. There was also time to make some projects for kids in the hospital and the elderly. They learned about fasteners and the types of wood available and how to oil and stain wood properly. The focus was on fun, safety & creativity!

Everyone started out by building a battle ship or cruise ship which allowed the use of each machine in the shop.

Then students took on a variety of individual projects including chairs, bird houses and feeders, Christmas decorations, shelves, candle stands, airplanes, and a horse barn.

Deanna Jansen led a sewing class in the afternoons. She's enthusiastic about the life-skill of sewing and has many years of sewing experience.

It is her aim to spark a healthy interest in sewing in the teens, as there are unlimited possibilities to enhance wardrobes or personal space, once one has a good foundation of sewing skills. Starting with getting comfortable with the machine, she taught the basics of sewing--pattern and fabric selection, layout and cutting of pattern pieces, general garment construction, and tips for a professional look and fit.

Lisa Vanderwoude (BA Redeemer University College) once again taught an art course. This one was a hands-on approach to creative idea development and the cultivation of technical skills. The format was similar to last year’s course with lecture material and two main projects focusing on perspective drawing. The first project was a pencil drawing focusing on the technical aspects of perspective (e.g. linear perspective, aerial perspective, ellipses, etc). The second project was an acrylic painting which focused on the conceptual and communicative aspects of perspective.

Each Thursday morning began with our study of the book, "The Transforming Vision; Shaping a Christian World View" by Brian J. Walsh and Richard Middleton.
How is the Japanese worldview different from our Western worldview? How do both of those stack up to a biblical view of the world? What is a biblical worldview? How might we live in that transforming and subversive way? How can our faith really make a difference in this culture? Using the book as reading and discussion material, we examined the cultural air we breathe in order to be better able to discern the times we live in and so become better equipped to be sharers of the Good News with our neighbours and our society.

CANOE TRIP - SEPT 2006

Our Co-op year started with the annual canoe trip led again by the more than capable Pypkers and MacKinnons.

After eating a hearty breakfast, having devotions, packing up food and sleeping bags and paddles and life jackets and more food and clothes and maps and first-aid supplies and canoes and kids, we left on Thursday, September 14th.

Great looking group, eh?

Canoes entered the waters of Gibson Lake, after which we traveled down the Gibson River, a bit of Georgian Bay, McCrae Lake, and ended in MacDonald Lake two days later.

Welcome back! September 16th - what a gorgeous day to end the canoe trip with.

Time to pack up everything into the vans once again... and there's talk already about next year's canoe trip. Thanks everyone!
